Pulling Together as a Team

Research shows a correlation between profits and employee engagement, which is fostered by consistent efforts to ensure workers at all levels make active contributions and feel valued. This session will share lessons learned from interviews with more than 100 contractors whose companies score high in employee satisfaction, based on the fact that their companies are recognized as top places to work in their markets. The session also will feature input from another study that found that when leaders clearly establish strong ethical norms, they foster positive work environments, outstanding performance, greater job satisfaction and improved quality of work from their whole teams. Therese Baer will explain the understanding her company has gained about the importance of applying philosophy and the study of values to sustain high ethical standards, plus Baer’s use of a specific screening tool for hiring and developing managers to support those norms. And finally, Ellyn Lester, of Stevens Institute of Technology, will speak to her observation that crucial knowledge transfer through mentorship has been one of the major business casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruptions. She will explain how companies should take immediate action to leverage mentorship and maintain the insights and expertise needed to sustain competitive advantage, and tell of ways they can ensure that knowledge sharing survives any other such formidable disruptions that may impact the AEC Industry in the future.
