Little Island Park turned a former pier into a 2.4-acre public space over the Hudson River that includes 132 giant concrete pots planted with full sized trees that connect via walkways to each other and to an outdoor performance venue.
This year’s group, which include three national 20 Under 40 honorees, impresses with their dedication to industry advancement, their contribution of professional skill and passion to their communities, and their support for diversity, equity and inclusion.
Beauty and beastly strength: Concrete made by Fort Miller Group, which precast the giant concrete flowerpot-like structures for Manhattan’s Little Island park on the Hudson River, boasts this traditionally unlikely combination.
For this year's ENR New York Top Starts editorial feature, the ranking is determined by contract value of the top construction projects that broke ground between Jan. 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2021, in New York or New Jersey.
In spite of 2020 challenges that included shuttering non-essential construction sites, the construction sector in New York and New Jersey completed scores of noteworthy projects—a number of which achieved recognition as ENR New York 2021 Best Projects.
