The Town of Gilbert plans to replace its existing North Water Treatment Plant in order to meet drinking water quality standards. Gilbert buys surface water from the Salt River Project which is treated at the plant. The quality of the water, which comes from the Salt and Verde Rivers, is inconsistent. The Salt River has high disinfection by-product formation potential and water clarity issues while the Verde River has elevated arsenic and challenges with its color. Due to recent catastrophic wildfires, droughts and intense wet-dry cycles, normal seasonal changes in water quality now occur weekly and even daily. After a wildfire, runoff from fire-scarred areas drains into SRP’s reservoirs, bringing ash and debris. The new treatment plant will have a capacity of 60 million gallons per day. A Sundt/CPL Construction Inc. joint venture has been selected as construction manager-at-risk. Construction is expected to start in April 2022. The project is valued at $237 million. KENTUCKY

In Phase I, 800,000 cu yd of earth and rock was excavated from Varia Mountain for the project and that fill was placed in temporary storage at Mayo Hollow. Phases II and III entail relocating Route 1428 and also relocating existing utilities (sewer, water, electric, gas and telephone), clearing of existing downtown structures and facilities, and placing the stored fill to raise an 8-acre site above the floodplain for redevelopment. LOUISIANA

The Louisiana Coastal Protection & Restoration Authority is planning to carry out the Mid-Breton Sediment Diversion Project. The project entails diverting 50,000 cu ft per second of water and sediment from the Mississippi River into Breton Sound. The diversion channel will be located south of Wills Point on the river’s east bank. Once completed, it will begin depositing sediment and benefitting marshes that have been sediment-starved since levees were built almost 100 years ago. The diversion will build and maintain almost 16,000 acres of new land in the Breton Basin during its first 50 years of operation. The addition of sediment and nutrients from the river will gradually increase soil strength, improving the marshes in the basin. These wetlands also provide an important line of defense against storm surge for local communities and the New Orleans metro region. The Louisiana Diversion Company LLC, has been selected as the construction manager. It is a joint venture of Brown & Root Industrial Services LLC, C.T. Corporation System, Massman Construction Co., Parsons Construction Group Inc., and Traylor Bros. Inc. Construction is expected to start in May 2024. The project is valued at $800 million.
