The new headquarters of electric power cooperative Hoosier Energy is designed to demonstrate sustainable use of energy and water resources. The HVAC system for the three-story, 80,000-sq-ft structure uses geothermal variable refrigerant flow, resulting in energy use about half that of a comparable office building. Metered faucets, dual-flush and ultra-low-flow fixtures reduce water consumption. Plug-load scheduling powers down selected electrical outlets overnight to conserve energy. Through active outreach via newsletters, building tours for the public and other measures, the cooperative educates the public on sustainability issues. Surpassing the original design goal of achieving LEED Silver certification, the headquarters has been certified LEED Gold.
