Building a residential tower in the heart of urban Los Angeles required the project team behind Solair Wilshire to become innovative, creative and collaborative.

Solair Wilshire is a 22-story, 780,000 sq-ft multifamily residential project that features one level of subterranean retail parking, 50,000 sq-ft of restaurant/retail space at the first two levels and four levels of above-grade resident parking.

Because Solair Wilshire is located in a dense, urban area of Los Angeles, building the project was not easy, especially since the project is located above a Los Angeles subway line.

The project team opted to use innovation to eliminate some potential building problems. For example, rather than waterproofing the concrete mat slab of the building foundation using the traditional methods – which brings concerns about the environment – the project team used Hycrete to create a waterproof barrier in the foundation.

The project team also designed and built scaffold platforms to build the two structural concrete cores of Solair Wilshire.

As each level was completed, the project team used the tower crane to install the scaffold platforms at the new concrete working deck without the need for manpower.
